Jackson Hole...

Jackson sits in a high mountain valley that Native peoples traveled through for thousands of years before trappers and “mountain men” began writing about the place they called Jackson’s Hole in the early 1800s. By the late 19th century a handful of stubborn ranching families were homesteading here, scraping by through long winters and short growing seasons. They soon discovered visitors would gladly pay to fish, hunt, and “play cowboy,” and Jackson’s early dude ranches turned the remote valley into a destination long before ski lifts or traffic lights arrived.

The little supply town officially became Jackson in 1894, incorporated in 1914, and made national headlines in 1920 when residents elected an all‑female town government, a Wild West experiment in democracy at the edge of the Tetons. Today, framed by two national parks and three ski areas, Jackson blends that ranching and dude‑ranch heritage with a modern resort town’s galleries, gear shops, and busy Town Square, but it still feels very much like the last corner of the Old West at the end of the road.
